________________________________________ Answer: in 1888 there were three breweries in the city with a combined capacity of 70 barrels per day, most of which was consumed locally. The Steam Brewery operated on 9th Ave. and was spring heated. City Brewery was located on 8th Ave. and boasted “one of the largest and finest brick malt houses in the state.” Lastly, Schinder & Co. was located on 6th Ave. The spring which fed these breweries was filled in 1916 and in 1917 two new breweries opened to take their place. The Uderman Brewery was located at the site of Cathedral’s playing field, and the Wimmer Brewery was located at 601 8th Ave. North.
